Female Infertility is defined as the inability to produce offspring after trying for one year, while having a normal sex life in the absence of contraception with a male partner who has normal reproductive function. In certain cases, such as advanced age, it is recommended to begin an evaluation prior to one year’s time. There are many different factors which cause infertility-40% female causes, 40% male causes and 20% unknown.
The combined use of Western Medical techniques with Chinese medicine and Acupuncture is shown to improve the outcome of infertility treatment. These modalities can be used with the use of IVF (In-Vitro Fertilization) or alone.
A full work up for infertility consists of many different tests which include hormonal evaluation, ultrasound, HSG (Hysterosalpingogram) which is used to evaluate the fallopian tubes; semen analysis, and possibly laparoscopy. This is combined with a comprehensive Chinese Medicine Diagnosis during which the root causes or patterns of disharmony are diagnosed. A regimen of Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine can be recommended to treat infertility as well as prepare for IVF (In-Vitro Fertilization)
The main objectives during this time are to improve the function of the ovaries, strengthen the immune system and reduce stress, improve semen quality, and improve diet and lifestyle. This alone often results in successful pregnancy. These treatments can also be used in preparation for IVF and are recommended approximately three months prior to IVF treatments.
